This course is for those who want more confidence reading and understanding a map. New to navigation or want to plan your own hikes. Learn the skills to navigate with a professional mountain leader. You will be provided with a map and compass. The route is not set as each group is different with different requirements. With the maximum number of 6 participants you will have the personalised interaction you need to become a successful navigator. Throughout the day we cover navigation is a variety of settings, such as fields, forests, around houses and farms.

  • Understanding the cardinal points on the map and using the compass.
  • Know how to setting the map and orientate it to features on the landscape.
  • To disover the different map symbols and how they relate to route planning
  • Knowing how to locate one’s self on map
  • exploring map fundamentals and their uses.
  • Understanding how to use a compass.
  • Identifying features in the landscape and relating them to the map.
  • Finding uses for contour lines
  • Using distance and time to plot a route.

Further elements are likely to be discussed/demonstrated through the day.
